Father forced daughters to stand out in cold while he set mother on fire
Family says Savanna Bailey, 23, is burned from the waist up after the father of her children doused her in gasoline and set her on fireMILWAUKEE —
Savanna Bailey, 23, is burned from the waist up after the father of her children doused her in gasoline and lit her on fire, according to her family.
It happened inside Savanna's home near North 8th and West Cherry streets early on Valentine's Day morning.
Savanna's mother, Wanda Bailey, told WISN 12 News police showed up at Wanda's door with Savanna's two children.
She said her 4-year-old granddaughter told police exactly what happened.
"I said, 'Cerenity, who burnt the house up? Who did you say burnt the house up,'" Wanda Bailey asked.
"My daddy did," Cerenity answered, her grandmother said.
According to Wanda Bailey, the man put the two girls outside in the -19 degree wind chill, then went back inside to attack Savanna.
"The baby didn't have no clothes on, no shoes. Cerenity just had (a T-shirt and underwear) on and no shoes," Wanda Bailey said.
Cerenity, 4, and Cemaya, 1, are physically unharmed.
Police later found and arrested a 26-year-old man in the case.
They have not released his name.
WISN is not publishing his name because he has not been charged.
Savanna Bailey has burns on 60 percent of her body, is sedated and on oxygen at St. Mary's Hospital.
Her family said she will likely need many surgeries and will be in the hospital for the next two to three months.
"I'm at a loss for words. She doesn't look like herself, but I know that's my sister," said Sharissa Johnson, Savanna Bailey's younger sister.
Savanna Bailey's sister and mother told WISN 12 News the man who did this has always been abusive and controlling.
"(She got) her hair done and I feel like this is why he did that, because she moved on and she found somebody new," Johnson said.
"How my daughter is suffering, I want him to suffer. He was out of order. He should have been out they life a long time ago," Wanda Bailey said. "He didn't care nothing about her so what makes you think he care about the kids?"
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with Savanna's medical bills and child care costs.
