It isn’t an unusual sight to see a 12 to 14 foot-long alligator in Georgia – but it is unusual to see one carrying a large adult deer in its mouth!

The photographs of the deer-eating gator were taken from a helicopter by Terri Jenkins, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service District Fire Management Officer, about 40 miles south of Savannah, Georgia.

Jenkins was on her way to start a prescribed fire at Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge, when she spotted the gator with its lunch from the air.

Alligators and deer will occasionally cross paths in the wild, but seeing a gator actually hunt a deer is quite rare.

When alligators are hungry, they will eat just about any animal they can get their jaws around.
